The first conversation was about replacing deck boards. That is a common call and usually a straightforward job: keep the structure, renew the surface. So the first site visit started where every resurfacing job should start — under the deck, not on it.
The structure and foundation were not fit to carry new surfaces. Putting premium boards on that frame would have dressed the problem, not fixed it. We told the owners what we found, and the project changed from a board swap to a full structural rebuild — new engineered foundation, new frame, and only then the surfaces the first phone call asked about.
That is not sales escalation. It is the opposite: the honest version costs a harder conversation up front and saves the owner from paying twice — once for boards, and again for the structure those boards needed all along. The deck on this page exists because the original question got the true answer.
The call was for new deck boards. The structure underneath changed the entire job.
The site is a bluff above the Hudson: steep, rocky terrain dropping away from the house, with the river and the Highlands running the full width of the horizon. On a property like this the view is not a bonus. It is the functional requirement every other decision answers to.
The design treats pool, house, and deck as one composition. The platform steps with the terrain in multiple levels, the pool sits in the deck rather than beside it, and the sightlines were checked the way railings get checked — from the chairs, from the doors, from the water. By day the structure stays quiet and lets the river talk. After dark it has to become legible: edges, stairs, and water readable without a single glaring fixture.
The rebuild starts below grade. An engineered helical-pile foundation carries the multi-level platform — steel piles driven into the slope to verified bearing, holding a deck that cannot be allowed to move on a site that wants to move everything. On a bluff edge, conventional excavation fights the terrain; piles work with it.
The frame above the piles is where the rest of the project quietly gets decided. Cable railing only holds its tension if the posts and rim do not flex. Stairs stepping down a rock face need stringers carried on structure, not on hope. A pool edge needs a deck plane that stays a deck plane. All of that is frame stiffness, and frame stiffness is engineering, not preference.
The pile layout, loads, and connection details for this project live where they belong — in the stamped engineering packet, reviewed and permitted before the first pile went in. Board color on a project this size is not judged from a sample chip — it is judged at scale, across changing light, from morning fog off the water to full summer sun. X-Series cable railing. The Trex Signature X-Series aluminum frame with stainless cable infill keeps the sightlines open from a seated position — the test that matters, because nobody stands at a railing all evening. The dark posts recede against the landscape. And cable is an engineered tension system: its performance was set in the framing stage, in the stiffness of the posts and rim it pulls against.
Haven full-color LED lighting. The Haven system runs in zones — stairs, perimeter, the walkway and pool surround, and a low ambient layer — each controllable on its own. Fixture placement, wiring paths, and the transformer location were resolved before the decking closed, because lighting is infrastructure first and atmosphere second.
Polywood Eastport in Weathered Tweed. The furniture finishes the composition without competing with it — tones pulled from the deck and the rock, placed where the sightline studies said people would actually sit. A deck this considered deserves furnishing chosen with the same discipline.

Night is where the planning shows. Stair risers carry their own light so every step reads. The perimeter zone defines the deck edge against the drop. The pool surround holds its own color, and the ambient layer keeps the seating legible without glare. Each zone tunes independently — a dinner scene, a late scene, a stairs-only scene — because the wiring was drawn that way before the boards went down.
