Trex Signature vs Trex Lineage: The Five-Hour Sun Rule
Trex Signature and Trex Transcend Lineage are not the same recommendation.
They both have a place. The mistake is treating every deck like the same deck.
Signature is a premium look board. It has a deeper, richer feel than the basic lines, and it can be exactly right when the house, the shade, the use pattern, and the design call for it.
We do not treat it as the answer for every full-sun deck.
The rule
If the deck gets five or more hours of direct sun, Lineage becomes the recommendation.
That is not because Signature is a lesser board. It is because the environment matters, and comfort underfoot is something you live with every day of the summer.
A shaded deck is one thing. A deck used mostly on summer evenings is one thing. A covered porch is one thing. A deck that cooks through the middle of the day is another animal entirely, and it should be specified like one.
Color is what you can see. Heat is what you live with.
Homeowners usually choose boards by color first. That is completely understandable — color is the thing you can look at.
But the way a board behaves in direct sun is the thing you will actually live with, barefoot, in July, with the dog on the deck and kids coming up from the pool.
That is why the consultation has to go deeper than a color card:
- What time of day will you actually use the deck?
- How many hours of direct sun does the space get?
- Are there kids? Dogs? Pool traffic? Bare feet?
- Is there shade now that will be gone once a tree comes down?
- Are you building this for Saturday nights or for summer afternoons?
Those answers change the board. They should.
Do the sample homework
We tell people to take the samples home and leave them on the actual deck area — not on the kitchen island.
Feel them at different times of day. Feel them at two in the afternoon in full sun, not at seven in the evening. The homeowners who do that homework understand the recommendation immediately, and they stop asking why we are steering them one way or the other.
Lineage got easier to explain the moment people felt the difference themselves. Early on, the reaction was that it was overpriced. Then homeowners tested the boards on their own deck, in their own sun, and understood what they were paying for.
The honest summary
Neither board is better in the abstract. Anyone who tells you one board wins everywhere is selling, not designing.
Signature is the premium grain and color tier, and on a shaded or evening-use deck it is a beautiful call. Lineage is the answer when the deck bakes.
The right board is not always the one that looks best under kitchen lights. The right board is the one that fits the way the deck is going to live outside.

How do I know how many hours of sun my deck gets?
Watch it on a clear day and note when direct sun hits the space and when it leaves. Most people are surprised — a south or west face routinely runs longer than expected, and a deck that feels shaded in the morning can take full sun from noon until evening. Does Lineage mean the deck will be cool in full sun?
No, and nobody should tell you that. Any deck surface in direct summer sun gets warm, and that is true of every material in the category. Lineage is the more comfortable choice under real sun exposure; it is not air conditioning. Shade structures, pergolas, and covered sections do more for comfort than board selection alone.
Can I use Signature on a deck that gets a lot of sun?
You can, and sometimes the design genuinely calls for it. We will build it and it will be a beautiful deck. We want you making that call knowing how the surface behaves in the middle of an August afternoon, rather than finding out in year one.
Can I mix boards between shaded and sunny sections?
We do not recommend it. Mixing lines across one deck creates exactly the uneven, patched look people are trying to avoid, and it complicates the warranty. If a deck has a sun problem in one zone, the better answers are shade, layout, or committing the whole surface to the board that suits the harder exposure.
