Everybody thinks they can build a deck.
Homeowners. Roofers. Siding guys. Carpenters. The guy who watched three videos and bought a new impact driver.
At the end of the day, if you do not know, you do not know.
Why it looks simple
Decking looks simple because the finished product is easy to understand. Boards go down. Rail goes up. Stairs connect the yard. It seems obvious.
It is not.
A real deck has structure, load paths, frost depth, permits, drainage, water management, thermal movement, ventilation, fastener selection, railing code, stair geometry, picture-frame planning, fascia movement, joist protection, warranty rules, and product-specific install details that differ by manufacturer.
Then the homeowner wants a finished ceiling underneath.
Then there is a septic tank in the way.
Then the yard drops off harder than it looked.
Then the rail needs to be cable.
Then the deck turns out to get five-plus hours of direct sun.
Then the scope grows to include a privacy wall, cladding, lighting, and a finished underside.
Now it is not "just a deck," and it never really was.
Where experience actually shows
The board matters. But the install decides whether the board gets a fair chance.
A great product installed wrong becomes a problem. A premium board on a wet, unprotected frame is not a premium deck — it is a premium board on a frame that is going to fail underneath it. A cable rail without real tension control becomes a spring callback, every spring. A mitered corner that ignores how the material moves opens up. An under-deck ceiling system that ignores a New York winter becomes ice.
None of those are product failures. They are install failures wearing a product's name.

Every one of those is a decision, and every one of them can be made well or made cheaply. A quote that only prices the boards is not pricing the deck.

How can I tell whether a builder actually knows this work?
Ask what happens under the boards. A builder who can explain their footing plan, how water leaves the frame, how they protect the joists, and how they handle board movement is describing the parts that decide the deck's lifespan. A builder who only wants to talk about color and finish date is selling you the visible ten percent.
Is a licensed carpenter enough for a deck?
Carpentry skill is necessary and not sufficient. Decks live outside, in frost, in water, and in daily temperature swings, and modern composite systems carry manufacturer-specific install requirements that affect the warranty. Excellent interior carpenters routinely miss those, because nothing indoors behaves this way.
Why do two quotes for "the same deck" differ so much?
Usually because they are not the same deck. Footing type and depth, joist protection, drainage, fastener grade, railing system, and whether engineering and permits are carried inside the scope all move the number substantially, and none of them are visible in a finished photograph. Compare the scope, not the total.
Does the manufacturer's warranty cover a bad installation?
No. Material warranties cover the material. Damage traced to installation is excluded, which is precisely why install quality decides whether that warranty is worth anything to you.
