Haven Full Color LED Deck Light with WiFi controllers gives you in-deck lights flush in the surface, riser lights washing each stair tread, post-cap lights glowing on the railing, and landscape zones reaching into the planting beds — warm white for dinner, soft amber for a quiet night, a team color for a party, all from your phone.
The plan comes first and the fixtures come last. We lay the lighting out before the deck is built, then install it after the picture-frame decking and railings are in: fixtures laid out, drilled, and set into the finished surface, wired from below. Wire is pre-run in the open frame only when a deck sits too tight to grade to get underneath later. Designed that way, the transformers are sized for the whole system and every fixture lands exactly where it belongs: even light, safe stairs, not a wire in sight.
Retrofits show their seams — surface-mounted wire chases, fixtures screwed wherever a wire could reach, voltage drop dimming the far lights. Every stair tread washed with riser light, because stairs after dark are the first safety question on any elevated deck. Post-cap fixtures that define the perimeter without glare. In-deck fixtures placed for circulation paths rather than scattered decoration. Landscape zones that reach the trees and beds, so the property reads as one composed scene instead of a lit platform in a dark yard.
The fixtures go in after the picture frame and railings, laid out and drilled into the finished surface, with wire pre-run in the frame only on a deck too low to get underneath. The layout itself is settled in the drawings — one of the reasons lighting belongs in the original design conversation, not the punch list.

Can deck lighting be added after the deck is built?
It can, and on our builds that is the normal order: picture frame and railings first, then the lights laid out, drilled, and installed. What shows is lighting that was never planned: surface-mounted chases, voltage drop, fixtures where wires could reach instead of where the design wants them. That is why we lay the lighting out before the deck is built.
